Tips on how to Transport your Car

Whether you’re moving to the other side of the country or abroad. Sometimes you would prefer not having to drive your car all the way to your destination, in cases such as these it’s wise to use a car transporter. When using uShip to have car transported be sure to read through this post, as we will discuss the major factors that should be considered when trying to ship a car.

Patience: The most important factor for people to understand about the process of car shipping is that this industry is not like the postal service. Pick-up and delivery dates are estimates at best. Problems such as breakdowns, traffic, and weather all contribute to delays. A lot of patience and forward planning is required.

Finding the right Transporter: Always do your research before committing to car shipping firm. By using uShip you are able to view prospective transporters feedback and reputation, so you can ensure the transporter you pick is safe and highly recommended.

Car Shipping Method: Open or Closed: Open trailers are either partially or fully exposed to the elements. There are many different types of open trailers, ranging from small three car carriers to the large 11 car carriers that you frequently see on the motorway. Closed trailers are protected from the elements, and your vehicle is basically shipped in a mobile garage, however, this is more expensive.

Check to see if you are properly insured:
Your car should be insured against all the usual things by the car transporter. Everything relating to the car shipment should be in writing. It is likely that your personal car insurance policy may cover your vehicle in transit.

Before Pick-up

Steps to prepare your Car for Shipping : Wash your car thoroughly even if will be shipped on an open trailer. You want to be able to note any chips, dings, nicks or other cosmetic damage accurately.

Don’t top off your gas tank, keep it low, in between 1/8th to 1/4th of a tank as this saves quite a bit of weight which the auto transporters appreciate.

Always transport convertibles with the top up and secured.

Make sure the battery is charged, that the tires have proper inflation and top off all of the fluids on the vehicle.

Do a Thorough Vehicle Inspection: Note its condition in order to ensure any claims of vehicle damage are accurate and can be ensured, make a complete report of any pre-existing damage your vehicle may have. You may want to go as far as taking pictures (and dating them) of the vehicle prior to shipping it.

Vehicle Pick-up

Meeting The Truck: Be On Time
Make sure you are on time to meet the driver and that your meeting spot is set well in advanced and easy to get to.

Releasing Your Car: Do the Paperwork Be sure to receive an original inspection report. This report provides pick-up and delivery information, the car’s current mileage, and most importantly documents the condition of your car at time of pick-up – pre-existing scratches and dents, cracked glass/mirrors, general paint condition, etc. Keep this report and use it when you receive your vehicle.

Vehicle Delivery

Be On Time:
Make sure you are on time to meet the driver and that your meeting spot is clearly defined and easy to get to for both parties. Remember the size and maneuvering restrictions of the truck.

Accepting The Car: What to Look for on Delivery
When your car arrives make sure that you do a complete inspection of the vehicle with a copy of the original inspection report in hand. Look for any damage that was not noted in the original report.

These are just a few tips to remember that helped me when I had my car shipped, and I hope they can help you.

uShip’s ‘2011 White Van Man of the Year’ Shifts Perceptions, Saves Lives

Rick-Garrison-Newscourier-uShip.com-2011-White-Van-Man-of-the-Year-200x300LONDON — While the typical White Van Man has made a name for himself, Rick Garrison – owner of Newscourier delivery service near Harlow – is doing what he can to improve those perceptions, even if it means saving a life along the way. Rick's "We Can Help" motto and above-and-beyond efforts have earned him the 2011 White Van Man of the Year award in the UK from uShip.com, the world's largest transport marketplace. In less than two years, through his single Ford Transit 100 T300 delivery van, Rick has earned Bronze Power Carrier status and a feedback score of 218, which includes 232 pieces of positive customer feedback, zero negative and a perfect five-star rating. He made a delivery every 2.5 days over that span and currently ranks No. 1033 among all of uShip's 225,000 registered transporters worldwide. For more on Rick's experience and customer feedback stories, see his profile at http://www.uship.com/uk/profile/newscourier

While his deliveries tend to be bulky items, such as tables, antiques, aquariums, breakables and unique eBay items, Rick's most valuable delivery found on uShip could simply fit into the palm of his hand: special medication desperately needed by a hospitalized patient. While visiting Liverpool, a woman had fallen and broken her hip, unexpectedly extending her stay and causing her to miss two weeks of critical injections for an existing health condition. Knowing she was in life-threatening need, Rick won the job on uShip.com, picked up the medication in Northampton and fought 150 miles of icy roads to Liverpool, all the while keeping the medication refrigerated. He hand-delivered it to two wards and then confirmed the £55-delivery with the customer. "I love my work and helping people with all their different delivery needs," said Rick. "I'm delighted to have won this award from uShip because customer service is really important to me, and I want my customers to know that I do the best job possible for them everytime. Ever since starting, my motto has been 'We Can Help' and I hope to carry on in business helping as many people as possible."

"The White Van Man of the Year award acknowledges a courier that not only provides five-star service, but also goes above-and-beyond to help their customers in unusual circumstances. Rick is a perfect example of this, especially with his heroic effort with the medication delivery," said Matt Chasen, CEO and founder of uShip. "Whatever opinion people have of the White Van Man, uShip's feedback system helps customers find trustworthy delivery companies like Rick's, and 98% of the time, customers leave positive feedback once they are connected with a transporter."

uShip Experiencing Temporary Address Verification Issues

To the uShip Community:

Since last Friday (16 September, 2011), uShip has been experiencing intermittent issues with the postal address verification process, which has prevented some addresses from being displayed properly on shipment listings.  Our technical team is working diligently to correct this issue as quickly as possible, though we don’t yet have a timeframe for resolution.  We understand that this is a inconvenience, but we ask that you bear with us while we work toward a solution.  In the meantime, if you come across a listing with an incomplete or inaccurate address, please ask the customer to post the origin or destination information within the Q&A area so that accurate bids will be placed.

We will follow up as soon as we have verified that the issue is resolved.  Please contact uShip Support with any questions. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Best,
The uShip Team

uShip Celebrates BusinessGreen Leaders

uShip was pleased to join the BusinessGreen business last night at the Merchant Taylor Hall, London, to celebrate the efforts of the UK's leading green and environmental businesses and organisations.

In BusinessGreen's own words;

"Last night, around 250 movers and shakers from across the UK's green economy gathered at Merchant Taylors Hall in the City of London to celebrate the inaugural BusinessGreen Leaders Awards.

The judges were hugely impressed by the quality of all the short listed entries and praised the winners as being at the forefront of efforts to build a sustainable and prosperous low carbon economy."

The number and calibre of the businesses at the event was inspirational, with a large proportion of them looking to provide solutions for greener transportation.  The event showcased the British businesses which will lead the way in innovative business solutions to tackle climate change.

Anonymous Bidding on uShip

As a response to feedback from Couriers and Transport providers, uShip is currently Beta Testing anonymous bidding for Transport Providers.

This means that only the logged in customer will be able to view the names of transport providers quoting on their jobs.  The customer can still see the full profile names, and click to view the transporters profile, exactly the same as before.  However, website visitors not logged in, and other Transport providers will simply see Courier 1, Courier 2, etc. and their prices.

This feature was requested by some transport providers who felt that sometimes the bidding and quoting got a little too personal.  With anonymous bidding we hope that transporters will feel able to bid more objectively, not knowing who else is quoting on the same job.

If you have any comments or feedback on these changes, please feel free to email spatterson@uship.com
